August 25, 2015: Skopelos, the Town to the First Monestary

August 25, 2015:

Skopelos, the Town to the First Monastery

This batch of photos represents my first day's exploration of the Island of Skopelos, where I did a 2.5 week artist-in-residency at the ever-enchanting Skopelos Foundation for the Arts
I was really there to do a video installation, so these photos were just my way of exploring a sense of place.

Starting in town...

Winding up the hill...

Climbing higher to a monestary...

Saved this small church for a later day. Trailer: This three-pew structure was full of icons and grandmotherly energy.

Saved this LARGE monastery for the same day as the little church above.  Good story coming...

THIS monestary I wound my way into on this day.  It was quite beautiful, and cared for by a very cranky monk.  When I went to town and told people where I adventured that day, the unanimous response was, "Oh, did you meet the cranky monk?" Apparently he has a reputation. I think he just needs some love.

Curiously, this Orthodox monastery has Pharonic iconography on the front door.  No one seems to know why...

Wound my way higher up the mountain, until I realized I was going to be feeling my way back 5 miles in the dark without a flashlight if I didn't turn around.

The monastery from high above...

Got 11 minutes, 6 seconds? See the video I installed at SkopArts. Installation was life size: https://vimeo.com/139816791
