Dolphins and Whales at Limatour Beach with Julie
For a belated birthday treat, my friend Julie and I went to Limatour Beach at Point Reyes, and arranged to meet up with my friend Ruah, too, for dinner after. There is a restaurant I love there for the healthy comfort food and the warm lighting. [Station House Cafe: http://www.stationhousecafe.com]
Julie was a bit run down, fighting a cold. As we got out of the car I said, "I hope we see some dolphins today to cheer you up!"
Well wouldn't you know it, as we crested the access trail towards the beach, a whole pod of dolphins was swimming right towards us! What are the odds! They stayed and played for about 20 minutes, and then there was a second pod.
We shot photos and got giddy, then took a rest to meditate on the beach. With my eyes closed I heard people ooo-ing and ahhhh-ing. I opened one eye and saw something spouting in the distance. I opened the other eye. "Julie, I think we've got a whale!"
As it turned out, there were TWO whales! People on the beach were thinking it was a mother and a baby. It was kinda hard to tell since they were mostly submerged, but one seemed to be bigger than the other.
I have had a lot of wonderful dolphin experiences hiking and trail running at the shore, but I'd never seen a WHALE from the beach!
The photos below are more capturing moments than "art," but hey they were whales! And dolphins! CLICK ON THE IMAGES TO SEE THEM LARGE.
